Cloud Security

June 11, 2010

A few months ago, I blogged about security concerns slowing adoption of virtualization.

Given security issues around virtualization, and how key virtualization is to the cloud, it’s not surprising that security is now a key impediment to moving applications into the cloud.

Consider a recent CA-sponsored survey on cloud security. It opens with:

“CA and the Ponemon Institute conducted a cloud security survey of U.S. and Europe IT and IT security professionals. The findings show that about half of the respondents don’t believe the organization has thoroughly vetted cloud services for security risks prior to deployment. It also showed that 55 percent of respondents are not confident they know all the cloud services in use in their organization today.”
This creates an opportunity for vendors to come up with new tools that help IT managers implement better cloud security.

One recent example is this tool from Fortify Software, which is a vulnerability assessment tool geared especially for vulnerabilities that arise in cloud deployment.

As a venture capital fund that invests in expansion stage software companies in exciting markets, OpenView Venture Partners look to seeing plenty more products and companies in this area.
