Security Concerns Slow Virtualization

March 15, 2010

I came across this article on a Gartner report focusing on the top 6 virtualization security risks today.

And in January, there was this report from CDW on much the same topic.

What else is new?

I started looking at the server virtualization market back in early 2005, when I worked on Insight Venture Partners’ venture capital financing into SWSoft, now Parallels, and then took a much closer look at the market when I worked the PlateSpin expansion capital infusion in late 2005 (PlateSpin has since been acquired by Novell).

And for the past five years, one of the more heavily written-about issues has been virtualization security. I was reading about it in 2005, and I’m reading about it today.

Luckily, several vendors have risen up to address these challenges.

I’ve seen Altor, Fortisphere, Catbird, and Vormetric out there for a while now.

I don’t think a clear leader has yet emerged, and I am curious to see how this market evolves over the coming years, especially from the perspective of expansion stage venture capital.

If you have any thoughts on this market, I’d love to hear them.
