How will the healthcare bill affect entrepreneurship?

March 24, 2010

In two of my most recent posts, I discussed the Startup Visa Act pending in the Senate and its possible effects on future entrepreneurship in the US, as well as how the Healthcare Bill will affect both small businesses and those with over 50 employees. Since I work for a growth venture capital fund, both of these topics made me consider the possible affect the Healthcare Bill will have on future entrepreneurship.
I wondered… Will people who want to start their own businesses but feel tied to their jobs because of healthcare benefits for their families leave to flex their entrepreneurial muscle once there is a more affordable insurance alternative? Honestly, I have no idea. So I did some research, came across an article by Megan McArdle of The Atlantic, titled Will Health Insurance Reform Spur Entrepreneurship?

McArdle poses some interesting empirical questions around this topic in her article, but I think that the jury is still out (and may be until well after 2014) on whether or not the Healthcare Bill will mean an increase or decrease in companies seeking venture funding in the future.
