Many Startups are in the Same Content Marketing Boat

Content marketing has become an extremely popular strategy for startup marketers over the past two years. The truth is that we have all faced similar challenges when trying to get our content marketing strategy off the ground. Here are the 3 common roadblocks all content marketers face over time:

Low Customer Engagement with your Content
I just read a post on CMI from Scott Frangos indicating a good measure of customer engagement – the number of pages per visitor. Frangos defines an engaged audience member as someone who views at least 3 pages per visit. It is important for content marketing newbies to remember that building customer engagement with your content development efforts TAKES TIME. Don’t be surprised that your blog has an average number of pages per visit of 2 or less. If you are looking to boost your level of customer engagement, consider avoiding these customer engagement killers I blogged about earlier this year.

Unengaged Employees
I would argue that it is essential to have a few employees within your team, outside of the marketing department, who are content marketing enthusiasts. Why? If you are a growing tech company, chances are that your marketing bench is only 1-2 people deep. By getting a few other team members on board to contribute to your corporate blog, you are instantly making it easier to achieve your content marketing goals. In addition, your content marketing team will be more creative since numerous minds are working together. So who is the most important person to internally champion content marketing? The CEO of course. Here are some additional tips to help you tap into the great resources within your company.

Simply Not Knowing Where to Start

Earlier today Corey O’Loughlin blogged about content marketing as a marathon, not a sprint (Hey, we are based in Boston and it is Marathon Monday after all)! It is important to remember that content marketing isn’t simply starting a blog and contributing to it for a few weeks and halting. Last Marathon Monday, I shared 7 tips to help startups get started with social media and content marketing quickly.
