Simplifying Social Media

December 14, 2009

A few months back I interviewed several marketers from a variety of companies about social media, while researching the topic as part of OpenView’s business development services for our portfolio companies.

Many marketers were:

  • New to using social media
  • Afraid to get started
  • Confused about integrating social media into a content marketing strategy
  • Lack of understanding of potential ROI
  • Unaware of the social media options out there

I thinkĀ Gauravonomics does a great job of simplifying social media. The framework depicts social media without simply listing potential tools. Instead, it focuses on the big picture.

I agree with Gauravonomics. To me, social media is essentially about giving your audience the power to interact with your company in the form of content creation. Once the content exists, it fuels the fire of conversation which may ultimately lead to a lively, meaningful community around your company or brand.
