Response to Don Bulmer’s “Principles of Influence in a Social World”

March 22, 2010

Last week, Don Bulmer of Everyday Influence wrote about the principles of influence in a social world. He began the post quoting Oprah Winfrey in saying “People don’t change behavior or positions based on what they know. They change behavior based on what they feel.” Like Bulmer, I was also inspired by the quote.

The use of social media has been consistently growing in popularity within the OpenView Venture Partners portfolio as more and more of our expansion stage companies adopt an approach to content management marketing and influence marketing.  It is important for all companies to have a solid understanding of how impactful social media can actually be on business. Most likely your customers and users are already talking about you somewhere in the social media landscape, it is up to you how to respond and address the comments – whether the comments are positive or negative.

Bulmer says it best:
Social media and principles of ‘social thinking’ companies are better able to understand in a direct and meaningful way how customers, employees and other stakeholders feel about issues that affect their brand as well as the behaviors and desires of their audiences to help adjust/create/transform its offerings to deliver greater value and create transformative experiences.
Bulmer is planning on blogging more about social media as it relates to corporate strategy, communications, sales, and customer support. I am looking forward to reading his viewpoints. Read more of Bulmer’s thoughts here.
