In a post for the Cranky Product Manager, the mysterious author delves into the similarities between product managers and five-year-olds, and why product management positioning within the company doesn’t matter all that much.
The author’s main gripe centers around where product management should report in an organization.
“Unsurprisingly…the overwhelming consensus that Product Management should report directly to the CEO,” she writes. But, she says, if you were to ask a project manager, they would say that he/she should report to the CEO, “because it’s cool to say you report to the CEO.”

But, she ponders; does it really matter where Product Management should be placed?
“If you have good product managers, who are savvy influencers and can set a true vision and roadmap for their products, it does not matter one freakin’ bit where they reside in the organization,” she writes. “Because they will get the job done no matter what.”
