Labcast: Reaching Your Full Potential with Scrum

January 17, 2013

In this week’s Labcast, Scrum co-creator Jeff Sutherland highlights the most common hurdles teams face when implementing Scrum and offers his solutions for how to check them out for good.

Implementing Scrum: Keys to Reaching Your Full Potential
It’s no secret that in today’s uncertain economy, companies are pushing their employees to do more with fewer resources. As a result, people need to be more organized and efficient than ever before just to be effective at their jobs. It’s a tall order, and one that requires a trusted solution.
Enter Scrum, the software development process developed by Dr. Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber to help software and IT companies work more effectively. Today that development process is being translated into many different industries and sectors, helping a variety of companies around the world gain greater clarity on what their teams are doing and how they can continuously improve. The result is consistently better performance and higher quality products.
Scrum was initially designed to create a radical change in performance, and is derived from the lean product development seen at Toyota. Companies that use Scrum should expect to experience Toyota-style performance. The problem, however, is that only 5 percent to 10 percent of Scrum teams are actually able to achieve that. The reason? Scrum is easy to understand, but hard to implement.
In this week’s Labcast, Jeff Sutherland explains what it takes for Scrum teams to meet their full potential by removing impediments to help optimize their performance. He describes some of the challenges of implementing Scrum successfully, including:
·      Bringing too many tasks into a sprint
·      Not completing those task by the end of the sprint
·      Failing to adjust work patterns when things go wrong
·      Not taking the time for scrumming the Scrum

Predictions for 2013

In addition to offering solutions to these and other common problems that hold so many Scrum teams back, Jeff shares his predictions for Scrum in 2013. For the tens of thousands of certified Scrum masters out there, it’s a podcast you can’t afford to miss.
